There’s an old aphorism with which I suspect you are familiar that goes ‘sticks and stones may break my bones but names will never hurt me.’ Hmmm. If only it were true. From Flashman ‘roasting’ the eponymous hero of the 1857 novel Tom Brown’s Schooldays to the current trend of ‘trolling’, bullying on one form or another has certain hurt countless children. It’s a topic that is often the subject of drama lessons. Indeed, some schools seem to think it is the drama department’s responsibility to tackle the problem. That maybe an acknowledgement of how drama can be very effective in changing attitudes and behaviour. The problem is, superficial treatment of serious issues can exacerbate the problem. This practical course will consider how to plan meaningful drama experiences that focus on bullying and its consequences. A wide range of activities and approaches will be employed and suggestions of suitable texts offered. The course will be of value to both primary and secondary school teachers.
The day will be led by Andy Kempe, Emeritus Professor of Drama Education, University of Reading. Andy has written a number of books and articles on many aspects of drama including ‘The GCSE Drama Coursebook’ and, with Helen Nicholson, ‘Learning to Teach Drama 11 – 18’. He is currently serving as an adviser to an Erasmus project researching how to tackle bullying in schools through drama.

STEP is a borough-wide partnership linking the theatre community and education and youth sector in the London Borough of Southwark. STEP aims to equalise, extend and deepen the theatre and drama experience of all young people living in Southwark through the development of strategic partnerships between schools, youth and community groups and theatres and performing arts organisations. STEP's objective is to work closely with Southwark schools, youth and community groups and theatres and performing arts organisations to develop creative approaches to learning and provide innovative projects which stimulate children and young people's personal development and contribute to their educational attainment.
