'Once I've got them going its fine...its just those first ten minutes...'
How often have we said this? And so what do we do? Copy a good lesson's starter and wonder why it didn't work a second time? Try to placate a difficult class by playing a game they like?
We don't have the space nor the time to go into in depth anaylsis or do mounds of reading and research to answer this question on every occasion - so we write it off as 'one of those things' or a 'a bad day'. Sometimes we are right...
This workshop for teachers of N/KS1/KS2 will not pretend to provide all the answers, however it will provide some basic principles which will help you find these answers for yourself and your classes.
It is no coincidence that playwright, playhouse, player and playhouse all enjoy the same stem.
Theatre has at its roots,in childs play. By tapping into these roots which are deep both in the natural development of the individual and in the development of the human race, you will gain some insight into why some things work and some things struggle; especially at the start of lessons.
This workshop provides some of these simple basics which can swiftly inform planning and help engage classes within the first ten minutes of your lesson.
Amanda Kipling is currently the leader of the PGCE Drama Course at Goldsmiths College. She has been a member of the English Speaking Board for many years and is a former editor of ESB’s Speaking English magazine and a Trustee of London Drama.

STEP is a borough-wide partnership linking the theatre community and education and youth sector in the London Borough of Southwark. STEP aims to equalise, extend and deepen the theatre and drama experience of all young people living in Southwark through the development of strategic partnerships between schools, youth and community groups and theatres and performing arts organisations. STEP's objective is to work closely with Southwark schools, youth and community groups and theatres and performing arts organisations to develop creative approaches to learning and provide innovative projects which stimulate children and young people's personal development and contribute to their educational attainment.
