Understanding Grotowski
This course, led by Lisa Woodward and supported by Giulia James, will focus on the basic principles of the work of the great theatre practitioner, Jerzy Grotowski, developed in his famous Theatre Laboratory and outlined in his book Towards a Poor Theatre.
The aim of the session is to demystify and clarify through practice the work of Grotowski in such away that materials will be generated that will be of use to you and your students in the school setting.
Aspects to be covered:
All participants MUST be bare foot and wear extremely comfortable clothing (the sorts of clothes you would wear down the gym or for a yoga class) and no jewellery, hair tied back. This will be a rigorous practical workshop and all participants need to be ready to physcially work hard. Try to eat two hours prior to the workshop and no chewing gum. Talking won't be permitted during the practical exploration of the body in the space.
Lisa Woodward is Head of Drama at Hurstmere School for Boys in Sidcup. She trained at Rose Bruford College in European Theatre Arts and has gone on to create a successful portfolio in theatre and drama education. Ian Morgan, who was taught by Grotowski in Italy in 1998, was one of Lisa's teachers at Rose Bruford and this has enabled her to bring Grotowski into the class room.
Giulia Jamesis a freelance theatre practitioner and runs Creative Performance Laboratories.
Tuesday 22nd November: 6.30-8.30pm (Registration 6-6.30pm).
Venue: Central School of Speech and Drama.
