Jo Palmer-Tweed

Primary Drama for Secondary People
This workshop will explore the relationship between play and Drama, drawing on best practice from primary settings and investigating the implications for secondary practice. Particular emphasis will be given to children's emotional and social development. This is a practical session which will include participant-based interactive story-making.

Jo Palmer-Tweed trained at Homerton College, Cambridge, and has worked in education for the past 26 years. Jo’s career has included work as an advanced skills teacher in Drama and a period working in headship in primary education in an improving schools team. Having worked in initial teacher education for the past fifteen years, in both universities and school-based provision Jo is currently The Executive Director of Essex and Thames Primary SCITT, a teacher-training provider, comprising 136 schools across Essex and London, working in some areas of extreme challenge. Jo spent two years as an Advisor at the Department for Education and is currently the Strategic Lead for The Expert Subject Advisory Groups, a group of 300 independent experts across the UK. Jo is a founding fellow of The Chartered College of Teaching and is an advisor for a range of organisations in the UK, including The Teacher Development Trust and The Goodall Foundation and is a Trustee for The Centre for Studies on Inclusive Education. Jo is also a parent representative on the Clic Sargent Participation Groups. Throughout her career in education Jo has also worked as a professional actor and voice artist, working with a range of companies of international renown.

STEP is a borough-wide partnership linking the theatre community and education and youth sector in the London Borough of Southwark. STEP aims to equalise, extend and deepen the theatre and drama experience of all young people living in Southwark through the development of strategic partnerships between schools, youth and community groups and theatres and performing arts organisations. STEP's objective is to work closely with Southwark schools, youth and community groups and theatres and performing arts organisations to develop creative approaches to learning and provide innovative projects which stimulate children and young people's personal development and contribute to their educational attainment.
