Mark had over 35 years teaching experience before going 'freelance'. His career is charted in his 2010 book Drama Schemes. Edexcel list his plays as amongst the most popular in GCSE Drama exams. Two of his plays have been selected as set texts in the GCSE 9-1 specifications. Mark lives with his wife, Rachael in Southampton. He remains the Youth Theatre Director at the Oasis Academy Lord's Hill where most of his work originates. In 2017 they will be presenting two tribute play to his rock star heroes – David Bowie and Mick Ronson (Spider from Mars guitarist). Can You Hear Me Major Tom? is a verbatim fan tribute play, featuring amongst others, the words of Mary Finnegan (David’s teenage girlfriend). This Is For You is Mark’s attempt at a more traditional play to the backdrop of Mick Ronson’s music.
Mark will present a workshop illustrating how he encourages his students/Youth Theatre members to be more theatrical as they immerse themselves in his less dialogue based scripts. It will show how 'impossible' scenes become possible and long monologues become opportunities for imaginative ensemble creation. He will use examples from old and new work.
