Taylor & Francis
ISBN: 9780415478724

A sound and practical introduction to the knowledge and skills needed to qualify as a teacher, the 5th edition of Learning to Teach in the Secondary School is designed to help you develop the qualities that lead to good practice and a successful future in education. It retains its focus on evidence-based practice and supporting theory which provide a framework for student teachers to critically reflect on their own learning and performance.

Written by experienced practitioners, this book addresses many of the situations and potential challenges faced by the student teacher today and inspires the confidence needed to respond effectively to dynamic classroom situations. A unit on personalised learning and another on the relationship between the brain and learning are new to this edition and all other units have been updated to reflect recent developments in professional knowledge and practice.

This core text accompanies the subject-specific Learning to Teach in the Secondary School Series and is an essential purchase for every aspiring secondary school teacher.

Questioning in Drama

Thurs 16th May 2019: 6.30-8.30pm
Venue: TBC

This is a practical workshop exploring alternatives to the mainstream targeted questioning in the classroom. It explores how theatre and drama engages questioning by its very nature, how drama provides rich material for deep questioning through the art form and the art of hidden questioning.
This course will enable you to
- refresh your questioning and answering techniques
- deepen dramatic engagement through enquiry
- refine transitions between activities and so streamline planning.
Led by Amanda Kipling, PGCE leader at Goldsmiths.

Why Teach GCSE Drama?

Wed 22nd May 2019: 6.30-8.30pm
Venue: TBC

At a time when your results are slipping because of government involvement in the curriculum, written exams and a cohort of SEND and EAL pupils, why teach GCSE Drama?
It’s time to think about moving to Btec where you are back in control of your curriculum: no exams, no set texts, three units based on your strengths with 100% coursework.
Led by Catherine Connor, PGCE leader at UEL.

Care & Good Use of Your Voice

Thurs 30th May 2019: 6.30-8.30pm
Venue: TBC

This is a practical workshop which traces the theory and practice of voice. From breathing through to articulation you will learn how your voice works, how it can be damaged, how to look out for danger signs and how to gain the most out of your voice while putting the least effort into it. This is an introduction to the mechanics of the artistic voice and provides training on two levels: -it provides an awareness of how to operate your own voice in the classroom to full effect; -it is a robust foundation for more creative vocal work with your classes.
Led by Amanda Kipling, PGCE leader at Goldsmiths.
